FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Quick and Easy Answers

How much does a website cost?

It depends! We know, that is the ever-elusive answer that you will get from every website designer and that you hate to hear. Not to worry, though. We can actually answer this question.

First of all, it is important to understand that websites come in all sizes, shapes, quality, and maintenance costs. Those details, along with WHO you choose to develop your site, all factor into the final price. To help you understand differences between providers and their quality:cost ratio, we find framing it in terms of car models and prices is helpful.

At the high end, you’ll find marketing companies. Most local marketing companies won’t create a website for any less than $10,000. They do usually provide high-end branding services and other marketing solutions outside of a website. Maintenance services will be more expensive, usually requiring a minimum charge (like $100 or more).

At the low end, you’ll find what we call the *brother-in-law deal*. That’s usually the guy or gal in the spare bedroom doing websites as a part-time job or as a favor. These range from free to several hundred dollars for a basic site. Maintenance services may not be available for long, depending on the full-time job situation.

How do I know what is included in a website I purchase?

It is vitally important that you know exactly what you are getting when you purchase a website!
That’s why we give detailed information about each of our website packages. Clear communication is the foundation of positive long-lasting relationships.

Each of our websites comes pre-packaged with a list of services included. Definitions for each of these items, and assignments of responsibility, are outlined in our Description of Services.

Are there monthly charges? For what?

Yes. There are some ongoing costs to owning a website, beyond the build of your site. You will have these costs regardless of the web design firm you hire.

  1. Domain name – There is an annual cost of $10 – $35/domain. We charge $20/year to purchase and manage your domain for you.
  2. Website hosting – your website must reside on a special computer that *serves* your site to the world wide web. We manage hosting for our clients for $20/month. We maintain very high standards for uptime and security.
  3. Backup and maintenance (optional, but highly recommended) – It is vital to keep your website backed up off-site and to maintain the software of any CMS, themes, plug-ins, e-commerce, or any other software that runs on your website. If you don’t, you run the risk of having two things occur: 1) your website may be hacked and used for malicious purposes, perhaps landing you on a blacklist, and/or 2) you may have a total loss of your website in the event of a server failure. Your website is a combination of files and, most likely, one or more databases. If your host server fails or if it is compromised for malicious purposes, you may need a clean backup to restore your site to its pre-event status. We offer a backup and WordPress maintenance service for $30/month, or $20/month if you host through us.

Ongoing edits to your site content can be performed by you at no additional cost. If you wish for us to make edits for you, our hourly rate is $75 and we pro-rate in five-minute increments.

How long does it take to build a site?

Not that long!
If you have all of your content (text & images) prepared and a clear vision of the overall design of the website, turn-around can be very short, often two weeks or less.

We find, however, that most of our sites take about 6 weeks to complete because we have to wait on content and design/page approval from our clients. Occasionally, website development takes longer, either because the functionality requested is extensive or, more frequently, our clients have had other business that has taken priority over website development.

Can I make my own updates and changes to the site?

Of course!

WordPress sites have an administrative back-end that gives you the ability to edit your site. Learning to work in WordPress has a bit of a learning curve, but we use a theme that is the most user-friendly option for non-programmers. We offer one-on-one training at your office or video tutorial customized specifically to the types of edits you expect to make on your site. If you are an experienced computer user, you should have no problem editing your site in WordPress.

If you don’t have a WordPress website, the extent to which you will be able to edit will depend on 1) the structure of the website, 2) the language it is written in, and 3) the software used for editing. We are more than happy to be a resource to help you find the best solution for you.

Can I choose where I have my site hosted?

Yes. You can host your site whereever you would like. Be aware that not all hosting companes provide the same service.

Hosting services vary widely. Many Internet service providers (ISPs) offer hosting service for free to their subscribers. People can also obtain hosting from other, alternative service providers such as telephone companies or domain registrars. This type of hosting is typically free, or cheap. Remember, you get what you pay for.

A complex commercial site calls for a more comprehensive package from a professional hosting company that provides database support and application development platforms. These facilities allow the customers to install programs, manage email and software environmental variables.

Most consumers measure the quality of a hosting company by dependability and availability. We do not keep hosting servers on-site. We shop for the best hosting and use the most dependable hosting services we can find. You can always contact us for any hosting questions or problems.

We can host your site for a small monthly fee.

Do I own the art and design on my site?

If you have any artwork or design done for your site be sure to ask your designer if that becomes the property of your company or if the designer retains ownership of that creative work. Many designers will retain the ownership (copyright) to both the website design and graphics. If you want to be free to use the materials and change designers without starting over, you want to purchase the copyright to your site.

Once you have paid for your site with us, you own the copyright to the work we have done for you.

If you want to use any of the artwork on your site for another purpose (other than the website), check with us first. Often we use photography that we purchase the copyright for use only as a website.

Can you create additional non-web marketing materials?

Putting a web site on the Internet does not guarantee instant success any more than having business cards printed and distributed creates an “instant business.” Especially when your site is new, only a limited amount of traffic to your site will be generated from the Internet itself.

Often, good, old fashioned, marketing materials puts your site in front of potential customers, even when they are not logged on.

We are website designers, but we know excellent graphic artists. We can refer you to a graphic artist, or, if you prefer, we can manage a print project for you.

We can help you increase traffic to your site with marketing materials, such as brochures, business cards, promotional materials, CDs, postcards, or even a new logo!

Can you make changes to a site I already have? Do I have to "give" all my web business to you?

Some designers will want exclusive rights to work on your web site. They may even ask that you move your web site hosting in addition to having exclusive design rights.

We are glad to help you If you want just a few changes to a site, without changing your web hosting or designing services. We are willing to “pitch hit,” so to say, requiring no long-term commitment.

Can you guarantee a top placement in the search engines?

No.

No company or individual can guarantee top placement in all the search engines, unless you pay the search engines to be listed that way. If a company tells you otherwise and then takes your money, you are being ripped off. A good web designer can explain to you how search engines work and will use worthwhile strategies to increase your site’s performance in search engines.

Beware of the designer who says he uses special tricks to get you into the search engines. Search Engines and Directories are constantly developing ways to locate Websites that are trying to cheat the system. Doing “tricks” could potentially get your site kicked out of the search engine listings.

How long will it take my site to show up in the search engines?

After a site is launched and submitted to the search engines, you can expect to see your site in the search engine within a few days.

This is not a guaranty! Unfortunately, it has been known to take up to three months for a site to show up in a search engine results. Once you are listed, it may take a long time before your site moves up.

Can we have a meeting?

We’d love to get to know you and to see your smiling face, both of which are easily accomplished through email and phone conversations. Everything needed to build a professional and stunning website can happen virtually, saving you time and money. We have chosen offer face-to-face meetings as an add-on service, instead of automatically charging you for it in the website packages. If meetings were automatically included, our package costs would increase and you would be paying for meeting time even if you didn’t need it. Why would you want to do that? Never fear, however, we are here for you whenever you have any questions or concerns. Just pick up the phone or shoot us an email.
